Report:

Over the weekend of Oct 10th-13th, the Javits Center in New York City played host to the 7th Annual New York Comic Con.Thousands of fans from all walks of life converged on the Big Apple for one of the biggest pop culture events on the East Coast. Representing the Star Wars Universe were actors Carrie Fisher and Ian McDiarmid who signed autographs for all of their loyal fans. The Toy Hunter, Jordan Hembrough was also in attendance via Hollywood Heroes. He was selling all sorts of vintage and modern toys and recording footage for his show on the Travel Channel. Some of the toys he brought along, like The Dukes of Hazard, The A-Team and Star Wars there were items that I had not seen in years and reminded me of my childhood.

Lego made its first ever appearance at NYCC and offered the limited edition exclusive Luke Skywalkerwith Landspeeder tin for purchase. Numerous other vendors were on hand carrying Star Wars merchandise. They included Dark Horse Comics, DK Publishing, Del Rey, Topps, Rubies Costumes, Outer Rim Toys and Collectibles, Hallmark, Mimoco, and Kotobukiya.

There were also costumes of all varieties being worn by the die-hard Cosplayers in attendance. If you could imagine a comic book or pop culture costume from the past 30 years, odds are there was someone in the Javits wearing it. Some of the costumes included the Ghostbusters from New Hampshire, Star Wars characters like X-wing pilots, Boba Fett, and Slave Leia, Comic characters like Batman, Spiderman, and Thor, and lots of Anime and video game characters.

Overall this was a very good experience. I got to meet some great people and hang out with friends from fan groups like Star Wars Fanboys & Girls and The Star Wars Autograph Collection. The convention itself had significantly grown since last year’s effort and I am definitely looking forward to seeing what NYCC has in store for 2013.

With NYCC now in the rear-view mirror, the Cantina turns its sights on November which will offer up two great looking conventions. First up is the inaugural Rhode Island Comic Con on November 3rd & 4th. Following on it’s heels will be the annual New England classic Super MegaFest on November 17th & 18th in Framingham, MA.

Until next time, thanks for checking out this report of the 2012 New York Comic Con and may the force be with you!
